- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2013Consider me a believer.
That's essentially all I can say about this razor, this newly-found art that has been long-lost but not forgotten. I've always had problems with my skin being overly sensitive and yet I had a beard made of kevlar; my neck especially would look like it was hit with a volley of birdshot after a shave. This is coming from someone who had essentially read up on everything concerning how to prep for a conventional shave. I tried immediately out of the shower, after washing my face, I tried various shaving creams, gels, pre-shaves, aftershaves, cheap disposable razors, cartridges, Mach 3, Hydro 3, Fusion, Fusion Pro-Glide, Fusion Pro-Glide Power etc...to no avail...The results were always the same. The razors would more or less tug on my hair and not cut and would inevitably result in in-grown hairs that would be further irritated by following shaves; a vicious circle.
And then one day I stumbled upon a DE razor for sale on a deals website I frequent. I read reviews and alot of people swore by DE razors and how much money they were saving and what a better shave they got. I passed up on it at the time but the idea continued to linger in the back of my mind. Finally, after many more months of terrible shaves and a neck that bore the resemblance of a half-exploded mine field, I was ready. I came here and began looking at my choices for DE razors, finally settling on the Merkur 180 merely because it has a longer handle, so making the switch from a cartridge razor would feel the same ergonomically. Very simple piece, 3 pieces total, feels sturdy as sturdy can be, blade changing is the simplest thing in the world.
I bought the Van Der Hagen shave set for the stand and the brush as well as the mug. I ordered some Proraso pre-shave balm, Proraso soap, and 10 Feather blades. I continue to stick with the Nivea post-shave balm as that comes highly recommended and I already had some in my arsenal, it would just fail to repair the damage that conventional razors did to my poor skin.
After several shaves I am nothing but amazed. Obviously my first shave wasn't the greatest, but with every subsequent shave comes a smoother and smoother finish. I wish I had taken some before and after pictures over the course of a few weeks to show the irritation levels dropping quicker than panties at a strip joint. This thing actually works. In all honesty even if this DOESN'T improve on your irritation, even IF you get the same quality shave as before, it would have been worth the switch in savings alone...but trust me, you'll get the results. Believe me. Also do not be afraid of getting cuts...It does not happen as often as you think. My first shave with the feathers resulted in several small nicks, but my most recent shave drew not a single drop of blood. You will not slice your face off with these, not even close. Do not listen to the over-exaggerations of some reviewers. Take your time, make easy, even passes with zero pressure, and clean your razor often.
In closing this is perhaps the best thing I could have done for myself in a long time in terms of grooming. My technique has not been perfected with this razor yet as I've barely owned it for two weeks and yet I'm getting some of the best shaves I've ever gotten. I can only imagine how many old timers shake their head in silent pity for the current generation as they see various commercials for 5/6 blade razors flash across their screen. With leaps and bounds in technology, sure, things get better; not shaving. This was an art that has been forced into becoming a science for the sake of convenience. We want things done faster and easier. The costs of cartridges have sky-rocketed and the quality of the shave received has gone down...All for the sake of convenience. As a man, you owe it to yourself to have the best shave, every time. Take a little extra time to shave and get yourself a DE razor. You won't be saving time, but you'll be saving money and you'll have a face as smooth as a newborn's behind. They had it right decades ago. Don't be fooled by any marketing gimmick you see on TV. If more people knew about DE razors Schick and Gillette would be out of business...You can't even find this stuff in stores anymore. I'm almost positive the reasoning behind that is because it would ruin business for cartridge-based razor manufacturers. Luckily I took a risk and came out on top. $50 worth of blades will last me close to 2 years and I will continue to enjoy amazing shaves. Shaving used to be something I dreaded...now it's something I look forward to. You should too.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2013I first shaved with the original Gillette version of this razor 50 years ago. For the last 40 years, I've been shaving with a cartridge (twin blade) razor. Over the years, my face has taken its share of abuse, and I finally decided that I should treat myself and my face better. I read all of the reviews here prior to buying, because that's what I do nowadays. I noted some reviewers' "dismay" at the length of the handle of this razor, but paid that no mind. Seriously? The cartridge razor that I have been shaving with for four decades has a longer handle than this. No matter, it works just fine for me. This razor has quite a bit of heft to it, so rather than dragging it across my face, I guide it and let its own weight do the work. I noted as well mentions of nicks. I've been shaving with the Merkur for a couple of months now--perhaps it is like riding a bike--once you've done it, you do not forget. No nicks to date.
Quality of the shave. For me, there are two types of shave; the "cosmetic" or "work day" shave vs. the barber quality shave. The first I call "cosmetic" because it looks like I've shaved, i.e., I can go to work with it looking good, but if I rub my face, I can feel what others cannot see. The cosmetic shave is a "one pass" shave with the grain. This is a work day shave because I get up early enough in the morning, I'm not getting up five minutes earlier to have the time for a barber quality shave. The barber quality shave is a two pass shave; rinse and re-lather after the first pass and shave against the grain the second time around. This razor excels at both, and the second pass shave, saved for special occasions, is exquisite--incredibly smooth results. This is the shave that I want when that special woman's fingers or lips caress my cheek. The Merkur more than delivers, I couldn't be more pleased.
Some people are concerned with the dangers of handling blade changes. All I can say to that is if you have a problem with changing the blades in this razor, you should stay out of the kitchen . . . or grow up.
Maintenance. Always take care of your tools. I rinse thoroughly and then wipe the razor (not the blade) completely after use. This keeps it nice and shiny and prevents soap residue buildup.
The other tools required. A great shave requires more than just a really good razor; if you are using soap from a can, you're only halfway there with the razor. High quality shaving soap or cream and a shave brush are prerequisites. The latter should be badger bristle only. Good badger shave brushes can be found on Amazon at reasonable prices. Note that it is common to lose a bristle or two on occasion. If you are losing more than that every time you use the brush, then you have a defective brush. This can happen even with highly respected brands, but it doesn't happen that often. My first two brushes lasted 20 years each, my third, only six months (my fourth has had no issues).
I finish up with an essential oils (no alcohol) shave balm. It's expensive, but only two drops are required per shave. This makes my face feel and smell great without the latter being noticeable to anyone who isn't in my embrace.
Bottom line: Great razor for experienced users, does an excellent job when used properly. Inexperienced users might want to use some caution until shaving with the Merkur becomes second nature. Shave properly and you will not only experience the best of shaves with the Mekur, but will actually look forward to shaving as something pleasurable rather than an annoying chore.

Client d'AmazonReviewed in France on October 1, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Bluffé
STYLE4MEN.CAReviewed in Canada on September 24, 20165.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous 3 piece safety razor
Based on my last experience with a safety razor I had some apprehension shaving with such a tool again. I was certainly questioning the praises for such a shaving solution. But my test was with a "butterfly" razor and this is one of two possible designs for safety razors.
The butterfly design is the one where the head of the razor opens up like wings to change the blade. See my other review on the Mn Essentials Safety Razor. The 3 piece razor on the other hand is a dis-assembling solution. You unscrew the blade holding components from the handle. The "3 piece" name comes from it's design which results in dismounting the handle, the blade holder and the top.
After some shopping I found a Merkur 180 at a decent price on Amazon. Note that this razor is also known as the 23c. This is a 3 piece razor that offers a longer than standard handle. Most razors have a 3 inches handle. Being a tall man, that size feels too small in my hand. I opted for a Merkur razor based on the number of positive reviews out there. Another razor that would of been a contender is the one from Edwin Jagger. It has just as many praises, but I couldn't find one within my target price range (less than $40). Yeah, these puppies can fetch a pretty steep price.

From a blade servicing perspective, the butterfly solution is clearly more user friendly and you will never be concerned that your digits are at risk. Now this is where the benefits stop I think. Since the basic butterfly solution essentially just holds the blade in place, it doesn't offer any angling for the said blade. It is just sitting in one straight position. The 3 piece razor on the other hand, squeezes the blade in place thus curbing it a little. This curvature can further be adjusted by tightening the razor or alternatively, by loosening it. Plainly said it offer better geometry. Seams like a silly detail?! To my surprise, this morning's shave was superb.
We can assume that the design objective of the butterfly opening was to make the blade replacement a risk free adventure. As much as I agree with that objective, the 3 piece design wins in the actual shaving space.
As for the razor itself, it has a very nice chrome finishing. Every piece shows detailed craftsmanship. The razor feels appropriately heavy, which is an important quality as the weight of the razor helps when shaving so that you are not putting pressure and risking unnecessary cuts and nicks. Merkur razors are made in Germany and the stereotype of excellence for German fabrication is justified.
The Test Stage:
• Fresh out of the shower
• Proraso Sensitive Pre-Shave cream (white jar)
• Proraso Sensitive Shaving Foam (white can)
• Merkur 180 Razor
• Shark Super Chrome Blade
I mention the blade because as with all things, I am sure that there will be small differences between each brand and that some will perform better than others. On my first test with a safety razor, it was a butterfly type with a Rockwell blade. At the time, I blamed the blade for my bad experience. Now I am more inclined in thinking it was simply the geometry limitation of the butterfly razor. Whatever the cause, I will be trying a number of different blades to narrow it down to the better shaving experience possible and obviously retry the Rockwell blades.
Having my face foamed up, I was ready for the shave. Each stroke was smooth, effortless and comfortable. Rinsing the razor between passes was a breeze. In fact it was going so well I was almost wondering why I waited a few days before trying this razor. I was suspicious that once the shave was completed I would be once again dealing with numerous tiny cuts and nicks all over my face. But no, it was literally a perfect shave.
The Merkur razor was not cheap at $38, but when you factor in the very low cost of the blades you are in fact ahead. Pacts of 100 blades sell for anywhere between $8 - $50. The norm appears to be about $15 for 100 blades or $0.15 a blade. The word on the street is that a blade will be good for 1-3 shaves. Let's say 2 shaves per blade for a total of 200 shaves for $15 of blades and $38 for the razor for a total of $53. That should more or less cover your shaving needs for some 6 months. The Gillette cartridge blades are easily $30 for 4 these days. Each of these last me about a month, plus the cost of the razor itself at about $15. Up front the cost are in the same ball park. You are ahead with the double edge razor after the first 4-6 months as your next 100 blades will cost you $15 as opposed to $30 +. I mention this because aside from the actual shave, the recurring argument from the double edge razor enthusiasts is the reduced cost.
In summary, the build quality is impeccable and shaving with this tool was a perfect experience.
The rating of this razor: To me it's a simple 5 / 5.

Amazing DE razor, delivered on time. The razor was in simple packaging doesn't comes in fancy packing.
Razor is well weighted and amazing craftsmanship, the chrome finishing and knurling on handle is work of art. You can't go wrong with this razor. After lot of consideration finally made a jump. Use the feather blades and it just glides on the skin.
Use an appropriate pre shave oil and start with the razor, no irritation, cuts etc.
Perfect for the BBS shave in just two rounds.

SuchandaSagarReviewed in India on October 13, 20175.0 out of 5 stars The best till date
Shaving was never fun, till I get this. I have thicker beard and shaving was painful, I tried many things, gillete mark3 etc. No luck. This de razor along with Asta blades is a great combination. You can't go wrong. Yes, people with less beards may not see much difference. I use it with poraso cream/soap and love to shave now.
