Highest resolution e-reader display
With twice as many pixels as the previous generation, Kindle Paperwhite has an improved high-resolution 300 ppi display for crisp, laser quality text.
No glare in bright sunlight
Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper.
Read comfortably with one hand
Lighter than a paperback, comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for those times when you can’t put the book down.
Charge monthly, not daily
Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless turned off and the light setting at ten).
Won't tire your eyes in the dark
Kindle Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.
Next-generation reading experience
Kindle Paperwhite offers Bookerly, an exclusive font crafted from the ground up for reading on digital screens. Warm and contemporary, Bookerly is inspired by the artistry of the best fonts in modern print books, but is hand-crafted for great readability at any font size.
Typesetting engine lays out words just as the author intended for beautiful rendering of pages. With improved character spacing and the addition of hyphenation, justification, kerning, ligatures, and drop cap support, our best-in-class typography helps you read faster with less eyestrain.
Enjoy reading with larger font sizes without compromising your reading experience. Page layout and margins automatically adapt to work well at even the largest font sizes. The typography and layout improvements are available on over half a million books, including many best sellers, with thousands more being added every week.
Lose yourself in a book
By design, Kindle Paperwhite is purpose-built for reading and creates a sanctuary so you can lose yourself in a book. Unlike tablets and phones, Kindle doesn’t distract you with social media, emails, and text messages.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019Option: Without Kindle UnlimitedDigital Storage Capacity: 4 GBColor: BlackVerified PurchaseI got this because several friends who know I enjoy reading, recommended kindles to me or finding a tablet that used e-ink technology. I'm in my early 30's and e-ink still baffles me. Photos of this do not do it justice. The way the screen feels is truly unique... matte, almost paper-like.
The built in light is great, especially at night when I'm trying to read under the covers in stealth mode for no reason. I do have the brightness on a low setting, as my eyes are sensitive to light... but the screen can be quite bright on full, you know. Brightness.
I like that it's a touch screen, sometimes my brain gets fuzzed on going to the next page and I go a different direction but I enjoy that you can touch on the screen anywhere for it really, whereas buttons are buttons in designated areas and not always in convenient places for people because people have different hand sizes.
So, when I got it, the thing was already turned on and had 50% battery life. Now... I was so fascinated with the thing and so starved for books, (I got Kindle Unlimited, woah it's worth it!) that I ran that battery down to nothing in 2 days. I read quite a few books in that time and I think I didn't even eat. Now that I've calmed my noodle and realized that there's a physical world I have to do chores in, it takes much, much longer to run the battery down. I can go several weeks without charging now. The cool thing is I don't have to turn it off, it doesn't use any battery when sleeping. It's honestly the light that kills the battery the fastest so if you want to charge less, use a light in your room.
I enjoy that it is small. I have small hands and anything bigger or heavier would be horrible.
I've had a few nights of reading where I've fallen asleep and been smacked in the face by it. I've also accidentally dropped it on a very startled cat... didn't hurt her but she was very confused!
Anywho, this thingy has been delightful. It is ALMOST like reading an actual book, except there's no awkward positions while trying to hold a heavy book comfortably in bed, or having some obnoxious light clipped to the book, or weirdly on your head... or being blinded by your cellphone while trying to read on a small screen (because I have a small phone lol) There's also none of that blue light nonsense.
I was apprehensive about getting a kindle with the ads, however they worded it. It's only on the "sleep" screen and you simply swipe and it yeets away. There's no pop ups, or anything constantly annoying you. Just the sleep screen.
Anyway, it's awesome and I'm glad I got it. It's an excellent starter tablet with the e-ink technology to see if you like it. I didn't get the latest and greatest because I'm a simple woman with simple needs and also don't particularly have income to drop $100's on something I might not like.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019Option: Without Kindle UnlimitedDigital Storage Capacity: 4 GBColor: BlackVerified PurchaseI bought this for my Christmas gift. And now I never leave home without it. Much easier than lugging around books in my purse, and it's a lot more discreet, especially for bigger books like Moby Dick where, if I pull it out of my purse, everyone in the room notices. Don't get scared by the words 'refurbished' and 'previous generation'; this looks brand new and works great. Battery life is amazing, I've had it on for a week straight with daily reading and it's only at around 75%. This e-reader has great resolution (words are crisp and clear), sufficient storage for my reading addict-ahem- hobby, and a light. That's... all I want really. Believe it or not, I don't fancy reading in a swimming pool, or dunking my kindle in conveniently placed bowls of water, or having spillable drinks precariously placed next to my electronic devices. So, yeah, I'm good on the waterproofing. And if you want my opinion on the other features of the most recent e-reader... I don't have one. Because 'waterproof' is the only new feature I remember. Make of that what you will.
So. Ads. Don't worry about the ads. They don't get in the way. At all. If you want to spend the extra bucks for no ads, it's up to you, but my reading experience has never been hindered by the ads. For more detail, ads (or special offers) are basically the lock screen. That's it. Once you swipe and go into your library, ads are gone. Until the device goes to sleep, and then the ad-lockscreen is there again. So... maybe save the extra bucks for a case instead? Just a thought.
I love that this is a no fluff device. To my knowledge there's no bloatware, no apps or features I'll never use, and as little interface as possible between me and my books. A beautifully simple device with a straightforward design that's made for one purpose. Just pull out and read. That's all it does. That's all I need it to do. It's perfect that way.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Option: Without Kindle UnlimitedDigital Storage Capacity: 4 GBColor: BlackVerified PurchaseThis is the best thing I have ever bought for my teenage girl to read, it is perfect, the screen size is big enough for it not to be anoying and not make the eyes move that much, the illumination is just accurate and smooth, the battery life is surprising considering she reads on average 8 to 9 hours a day now that she is on vacation. She imported all her collection in the Kindle the first in a matter of minutes, the dictionary is such a helpful tool to have, there are lots of words she is learning and the integration of Goodreads it's so convenient because she likes to keep record of what we reads and discover what to read next, and it immediately recommends her lots of books, she has stopped using her phone altogether barely touches it, I'm very surprised and pleased that she is pleased and loves it. This refurbished version was impecable it had no scuffs or stains and it works as intended. I bought a case too, that looks like a notebook and she loved it too and it protects the Kindle and having a case that turns on and off the Kindle is more important than what you could think. It is about the size of her hand, a little smaller than a standard paperback.
