- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2017Color: WhiteConfiguration: Echo ShowVerified PurchaseI know that many media folks have stated that the "Drop-in" feature of the Echos is "creepy" and can see their point. Here's a different perspective. Mom is now almost 95 and she has short term memory dementia, she's in great spirits but I really can't teach her anything technical, like dialing a phone or even pressing a memory dial button. She lives near my sister and is 2 hours away so visiting is always a bit of a project.
I thought I'd try setting a Show next to her rocking chair. I can now "Drop-in" on her every day and share some face time with her, visit with her grand daughter, see the dog whom she LOVES, and just make her smile. The beauty is that there is no interaction needed on her end, the Caregivers and my Mom love this setup. The fact that I can use my phone from anywhere and actually see and talk to Mom, and show her things is hugely entertaining and comforting for Mom, and everyone in the family.
So I say with extreme gratitude, Thank You Amazon for creating an amazingly personally helpful tool for the elderly.
Personally I am enjoying all of the other great features of an Alexa with a screen, using her with my Arlo Cameras, etc. It truly is quite an amazing platform! In my office I added a small Pioneer bookshelf stereo, I can be listening to Spotify, Pandora etc and say "Alexa, connect Bluetooth", the Pioneer stereo is Bluetooth enabled, it can be OFF and with that single voice command, the Show will wake up the Pioneer, and begin playing the sound over its speakers with no other intervention from me! This is magical stuff!
The only bug I have at the moment, "Alexa, turn off the screen", the screen turns off, then immediately turns back on. Tell her again and the screen stays off, pretty consistent bug. Edit- Seems fixed now!
1/06/2018 Still enjoying my Echo Shows very much, I don't expect this to replace a tablet, it does many things very well, besides being indispensable with visiting Mom. Currently there is one in the Kitchen and it is used by the family to play lots of music, having the screen is really nice to be able to see what's playing etc. We are trying Amazon Music and so far it's pretty sweet as well, "Alexa show me all albums from Keith Urban", up comes pictures of all of his 12 or so album covers, touch one and play the album. Alexa, "Connect Bluetooth" and the Show connects to a Bluetooth receiver I have on our whole house stereo. Alexa "Turn on the Stereo", Alexa controls the Logitech Harmony remote to power up the stereo and now we are hearing music everywhere, nice.
We've also added some Ring cameras and doorbell, "Alexa, show me the front door", now I'm looking out front.
Oh, and our doggie monitor/treat shooter, Furbo, "Alexa, ask Furbo to toss a treat" is our dog "Cookie" 's favorite skill!
Bottom line, this is a very powerful system, don't get me wrong we love our Apple products (Phones, iPads, and Macs) but I prefer this Amazon ecosystem for my home music, automation, and general questions etc. as it's a fairly open system that plays well with 3rd parties when compared to the likes of Apple.
I would never have imagined all that is possible with these units!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2017Color: WhiteConfiguration: Echo ShowVerified PurchaseFirst, I want to explain a little about my history with Echo, which may help those of you who are trying to choose between the various Echo products.
When the Echo Show first came out, I was excited about the possibilities, but a screen didn't appeal to me as I was mostly focused on finding an easy way to play music throughout our house, and the original Echo speaker worked great for that. I originally chose the Echo because I want quality sound but I don't need anything that anyone would consider hi-fi, so I didn't want to invest in a more expensive ecosystem like Sonos or Bose (plus, at the time, Sonos didn't have a speaker with Alexa yet). I just wanted background music for the bedroom when getting ready, in the living room when hanging out, and in the kitchen when cooking and eating, so I invested in a Dot and a few Echoes (I have several of both the original Echo and the 2017 2nd generation Echo). I've been really happy with all of these speakers.
However, as I've invested more in the Echo ecosystem, I've also started to incorporate more smart home products, especially wifi outlet switches. While those don't benefit from a screen, I've become increasingly interested in getting a smart thermostat and wifi cameras as well. So, when the Show went on sale for $179.99 on Black Friday (plus just $5 more for a TP-Link Mini Smart Plug) at Best Buy, I went and picked one up (it was the first time I've ever bought an Echo device from any place other than Amazon, and it didn't affect set-up or anything at all).
Here's why I give this 5 stars:
+ The setup was the easiest of all the Echo products I own because you set it up using it's own screen instead of the app of the phone.
+ The screen is vivid and clear, perfect for watching videos in casual circumstances and for seeing song lyrics, which my wife enjoys.
+ The sound is much more crisp, clear, and full sounding than any of my other Echoes (my Dot is hooked up to a Klipsch 2.1 Promedia system, so it technically sounds better, but honestly, for 90% of my listening, I'd actually prefer the all-in-one Show). Before I got the Show, I was pairing 2 standard Echoes in my bedroom for a fuller sound, but I've found that the Show is enough for our bedroom (the Show isn't equal to the 2 paired Echoes, but it's good enough to stand alone). I actually think the sound for the type of music I listen to most (modern, acoustic, mellow folk and indie) is really quite good. The quality also stays much better than my other Echo speakers when played at higher volumes, too.
+ The user interface is pretty simple and intuitive
+ The screen adds a dimension that the other Echoes cannot (lyrics, display time and temperature, showing suggestions and ways to engage with it) that I have appreciated. I may grow tired of the suggestions, but the preferences will allow you to limit some of that. Also, simple things that I commonly do with my Echoes is just better with a screen (for example, some parts of my Flash Briefing now have video and weather forecasts are easier for me to digest when I see them [likewise when I ask about what's on my calendar]).
The only drawback I've found with the hardware itself is that it's not built onto a rotating platform or one that can change the angle at which the show sits. Third parties have made bases for the Show, but ones that do all of that aren't exactly cheap, and I haven't yet justified spending the extra money.
While I give the Show 5 stars, there are a few things I hope that Amazon and third parties will add to improve the overall experience:
- Add more video flash briefing content (especially content that was originally video, such as the Daily Show and late-night monologues).
- Create some sort of a night mode that keeps the screen off except when I want to see the time (perhaps a tap to bring the screen on as it does now, but then include a way to easily turn the screen back off without saying, "Alexa, turn off the screen," such as another tap or simply have a setting for it to turn completely off again after 5-10 seconds. [***Update 12/8/17: This actually is a feature -- it just takes two steps: all you have to do is go to Settings -> Display and toggle off the Ambient Clock. Then, turn the Echo's Do Not Disturb Mode on. It will now default to having the screen off, and it will turn on for only a short time as you interact with it (which can be through touch, so you don't wake anyone up if you just want to see the time in the middle of the night). Now I think the Echo Show is the perfect bedside replacement for an alarm clock.***]
- Allow alarms to be set to play a music playlist instead of an alarm sound. [***Update 12/12/17: Thanks to a new update on 12/11/17, this is an option!***]
- More generally, and I'm not sure if this is possible because of the way Amazon is using Bluetooth to create multi-room audio groups, I'd like to see multi-room music become more flexible (speakers could belong to more than one group or groups could be nested together under a larger group). I'd also like to be able to 'move' music (such as a playlist I'm currently playing) from one group to another (like when I leave my bedroom to go down to the living room) without having to start the playlist over.
Overall, I highly recommend this Echo. I think it is by far the best of all my Echo devices (though they are all great, too!)
