- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2018Setup was typical for an "Alexa" type product, with the exception of setting up my AV receiver (an older Denon model). Had some anxious moments that the IR blaster wasn't going to work in my setup, but once I figured out what the setup was trying to do I was able to make it work. I'll put 50 percent of the blame on me, and 50 percent on my old "dumb" receiver. Either way it was up and running in short order.
Had I rated this product within the first 24 hours of setup it would have gotten 1 star (or minus 6 million if that was an option). The remote was laggy, the streams were constantly buffering (music, audio, video). Not sure if it spent some time updating, but these issues have been long gone since that first day (about a month ago). It was particularly frustrating as we had this hooked up through our LAN (having a wired connection option is a welcome feature). We now also have a second one installed and it never had those problems.
Once setup, I am able to turn the tv on and off and even change channels and raise/lower the volume by voice (volume is a little clunky). The microphones in the device seem to pick up voice far better than other Echo devices in my home. Using a streaming tv subscription we're not bound by channel numbers, so the remote is fine for what we use it for. I can see the remote being far less useful for those on cable or satellite services, as the remote doesn't have numbers or guide buttons. The newest version does have volume and power buttons (great for us as we pretty much only use voice to turn the tv on and off as we run out the door).
One feature I like is that it will turn on my tv and receiver when I ask it to play music (at least from the ones I've tried- Amazon Music and Pandora). Good to be able to hear music through the big speakers, and it seems to still be able to hear my voice without having to get into a shouting match with it ("Alexa, STOP").
I'm sure this product will continue to evolve, but for now it doesn't support several features that other Echo devices do (drop in, music group to name a couple ) and it sometimes hears its name when trying to interact with another device in another room which makes it "pause" the tv momentarily (you can change device names and it's just a minor inconvenience, but other Echo devices don't really do this).
YouTube is accessed through a browser (FireFox seems to work well for this).
If anything changes I'll update, but for now it's a solid device, especially for cord cutters.
**UPDATE**
speaker groups are now supported. This includes the ability to sync this device to the audio in the other devices in the group. Pretty cool.
Once in a while an app will crash (PS Vue or Hulu) or pause, but it's more an annoyance than a deal breaker.
We now have 3 of these devices in our house and one of them seems to have a partially functioning remote.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2019So, I tried Android boxes, NVidia box and a Roku box and Fire TV Cube beat them all. I would have liked the Android boxes if they weren't so buggy. I have been using an Android box for years and updated to the latest version and it was just buggy as it always has been. It isn't anything I could specifically point out but it just has issues. I am sure it is the firmware but I have tried 2 or 3 and had the same issues.
This is purely for cable cutters who want to run streaming services or for home automation with Alexa. This is not made for gaming. You only have Amazon apps and the game selection is so so. If you are looking for a gaming box I would look elsewhere.
The Fire TV Cube is just solid. It is t without its issues but they are minor annoyances. It doesn't run Android so you are limited to what Amazon decides to run but so far I have been able to get everything I wanted. I run Hulu as our main "cable replacement" and it runs flawlessly. I also use Pluto and a few others and they all run very well. The picture quality is 1080p quality (I don't have 4k) except during live events such as football. I am running on a Gigabit internet at 400mbs constant streaming and I use a 128g memory stick to offload apps and it runs good on live sports but not great. It seems to be the buffering and that would be due to the low RAM. I think the FTC has 2 mb RAM where some Android boxes run 4 or 6. I am not sure how much of a difference this makes though. It just looks like it is buffering sometimes on live football games. The picture gets a little choppy and pixelated. It isn't constant it only happens occasionally. TV programs on Hulu and movies on any services are pure 1080p and very excellent quality. I want sure how good the picture quality would be and it is great!
Alexa is a blast. I went ahead and ordered some Alexa enabled switches and run all my lights on the first floor and my patio on Alexa. It is fun for the kids to try and annoy Alexa as well. There are tons of "skills" available that make watching TV and home automation fun. There are also a ton of "skills" for news, weather, jokes, sounds, learning and so on.
I think we are going to see more evolution in streaming devices as more people leave cable. The quality of these boxes will improve just as any other tech gear. For now, for me, the Amazon Fire TV Cube is the best of the bunch and it does a great job for me and my family.
Use voice commands or the remote buttons to control compatible TVs, soundbars, and A/V receivers from popular brands like Samsung, Sony, LG, Vizio, and more. Plus, tune to live TV channels with cable and satellite boxes from top providers like Comcast, DISH, and DIRECTV/AT&T U-verse—just ask Alexa.
Enjoy stunning 4K Ultra HD streaming up to 60 fps and HDR enabling more vivid, lifelike colors and exceptional clarity. Feel scenes come to life with three-dimensional Dolby Atmos audio on select Prime Video titles when connected to compatible home audio systems.
Tune to live sports and the latest must-see TV shows through Fire TV Cube without cable or satellite service. Subscribe to apps like Hulu and PlayStation Vue to access the live content you care about most. Or use an indoor HD antenna connected directly to your TV to watch broadcast networks like NBC and PBS for free.
