Amazing Deal for the Price
I bought the tablet on Prime Day for a discounted price. For $50 I knew it was not going to be better than my previous tablet which was an iPad Air (1st generation) for which I paid 16 times more than the Fire HD 8. Since I gave my iPad to my daughter for school, I needed a tablet for myself. I didn't want to spend more than $500 on a tablet for sure, so this tablet was perfect for my budget. All I use my tablet for was to watch videos and reply to emails, so I knew I didn't need a powerhouse like the new iPad Pro. And most definitely I needed something portable, which the iPad Pro definitely isn't. So I decided to try out the Fire HD8. Honestly I am genuinely surprised with how much the HD8 has to offer. For $50 I was able to do a lot, so here are the cons and pros after using it for 1 month. Pros: Very affordable (get the one with ads, ads are only on the lock screen totally not intrusive, you save $15.00, close to 20% off total price) Alexa hands-free (amazing feature to control all my smart appliances at home) 720p video SD Card (unlike the iPad) Feels sturdy (I feel that if I drop the tablet it won't break fairly easy) Battery life (pretty solid battery for a small tablet, about 10 hours from my experience) Cons: Limited amount of apps from the Amazon app store (absolutely no google apps at all, made from google anyways, only knock-offs) Speakers (they are not very loud and it's very apparently once you start to consume media, but they are ok) Cameras (every time you open the cameras you'll feel as if you're back to 2005, but not a deal breaker for me though) Not a full Android experience (you will need to install the Play Store APK in order to get android apps, but not a lot of people will be able to) Laggy (it is laggy at times, especially if you have multiple apps open in the background, so try to close any apps you're not using) SD card slot is a very difficult to pop open... seriously (might have been just my unit though) Screen (resolution is adequate, especially considering the price, but it doesn't get too bright) Conclusion: In conclusion, I would totally recommend the HD 8 because I feel that for the price you are getting a lot. That being said, don't go in and expect the performance of an iPad because you won't find it. If you go in and know what to expect, you will enjoy the experience like I have. 6 Weeks Later: The tablet broke down on me. It got stuck on the booting screen. I called Amazon and the lady who helped me was absolutely not knowledgeable on how to fix the problem. She sent me a replacement instead, which I was happy for. 2 days later I receive it on my door. I opened the package and it was a refurbished unit sent to me. How do I know it was a refurbished unit? Well, it said so in the box it came in LOL. I paid for a brand new unit the day I bought it, and 6 weeks later it breaks down and now I am stuck with a REFURBISHED tablet. Needless to say, I am very disappointed that Amazon sent me a refurbished HD8 instead of another brand new one, but at least it works, for now anyways. I will post a follow up to see how the refurbished replacement holds up. Follow up: I have been using my HD8 for a while now and after the replacement was sent I have had no issues whatsoever. Battery lasts 2 days for me and I am pleasantly surprised. Definitely recommend it!

This is my third Fire . I have a 6 inch 16g , a 7 inch 8g and now this 8 inch 32g eighth generation . They all work well. I have used the first 2 extensively. And will probably use the 8 inch extensively also. What I discovered , over the long term is that built in memory is more important than screen size. Only a few functions will transfer to an add on SD CARD , that leaves you effectively limited to the built in memory. At first it doesn't matter but after awhile , no matter what else you try to delete you end up not having enough memory to do everything that you were doing. I can still do much with my 6 inch 16g , but I am very limited with what I can now do with my 7 inch 8g even though I have a 32g SD CARD in it. Practically none of the "functionality" ( APPS ) will transfer to the card. If you cannot afford more built in memory go ahead and buy the lessor memory but if you can possibly spring for the increased built in memory you will really be glad you did a little later........ The fire's are all well worth their price and are extremely useful and easy to use. ...... They are also very durable , although the screen will crack with a direct impact on to a hard surface from a high distance , but it has to be a severe drop , and even at that the device still works good . ( I dropped badly my 6 inch , I am totally amazed that it still works ) . ........ The new 8 inch has way better sound and although the screen on the older 2 devices was very nice , this new 8 inch seems even better to me. Even though the main functionality is dependent on built in storage I have ordered a high performance Samsung 128g SD CARD (cheap $24) just so I will never have to worry about "storage" storage ( like books , music and other media like PDF files , I download a lot of service manuals ) . .............. Great devices I highly recommend them !

For years I thought about getting a cheap tablet for simple browsing, but Noooo, I had to have a name brand with all the bells and whistles. Fast forward a few years and a few dead batteries later, it was time to replace my name brand "doorstops". I've always hesitated with Fire HD tablets after reading reviews that indicated that they were slow, unresponsive, limited Apps in the Amazon store, yadda-yadda-yadda. Well, I bought one for an elderly family member last Christmas and played around with while I set it up. I was very impressed with this 8-inch especially after putting the Google Play store on it in order to install the Youtube App that she just had to have. I was so impressed that less than a month later I bought the 10-inch version. About a month later, I realized that the 8-inch version was the perfect size and fits your hand well while couch surfing. I then bought the 8-inch and haven't turned the 10-inch on ever since. It was passed the return date so I'm kind of stuck with 10-ich unless I decide to regift it. But again, I'm still impressed.

Does it have a storage limitation? Yes, but that's what an micro-SD card if for and they are cheap.
Does it have RAM limitation? Yes, but as long as you know that upfront and try to play games that require a lot of RAM, this tablet will suit you just fine. It's perfect for browsing, checking your e-mail, causal everyday games, watching Prime videos, Hulu, etc. The screen has great resolution for the price and form factor. Sound is fairly nice for a small tablet, better than most. I honestly don't miss my old "Sammy Note" at all. Overall the latest generation of Fire HD tablets are the best entry-level tablets money can buy. Need the Google Play Store? Do a Google search for "Play Store on Fire HD" and install it using the many steps-by-step instructions found on the net. It works, it's "easy" to set up and gives you access to all the Apps you "think" you need to have on a 8-inch Android Tablet.

    Still on the fence? Why?

Don't procrastinate or hesitate due to the negative reviews from people who were too cheap to buy a tablet with a processor and the RAM designed for more powerful Apps. For the price and the casual use cases I mentioned above, this is the best value out there. Get one and see for yourself!

I bought the Kindle Fire just for the convenience of having the extra device, and I don't use it all that often. It's a third device for me after my smartphone (LG V30) and my laptop (a kinda old Dell Latitude).

It's a decent device only because it is super duper cheap. The screen resolution is not so great, and you have to sideload Google Play if you want to use it. However, sideloading Google Play is not that difficult (I found easy instructions on YouTube) and since I only paid $50 for this Kindle Fire around the holidays, I can hardly complain. I also appreciate that I didn't have to do a deal with the devil or a wireless carrier to get it at a good price.

Video- I prefer my laptop for watching video, but I typically use the Kindle Fire off to the side of my laptop for background watching when I want to watch a video of some kind while I am using my laptop for other things.

Books- I read most books on my Kindle app on my smartphone, but this is nice for books or magazines that have more to look at in terms of visuals. (design, cooking, crafts etc). I also use it to load up knitting and crochet patterns (which are usually pretty low-res) without printing them out.

I didn't have super high expectations, but the only real point of disappointment was with gaming. I play several mobile games, which I usually play on my LG V30 (a very good Android smartphone). These include casino games, a fashion game, a home design game, and a few others. With all of the games I play, part of the fun is in the graphics and I wanted to use the Kindle Fire to play the games on the larger screen. Even though I was able to get them from Google Play after sideloading it, and the screen is definitely bigger, the screen resolution is so poor compared to my phone that I really don't use it for playing games as much as I thought I would. Especially with the fashion game and the home design game, it's just not as fun on the Kindle when the resolution is so much better on my phone. Of course, my phone is a high end device and the Kindle Fire is not. So this is definitely a first world problem and not a product fail in the least.

Despite the disappointment with gaming, overall I think this is a useful device and it has a super great price for what you can do with it, so that's why I gave it 4 stars. If it was more expensive, it would be a 3-star rating.
