- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019I already own two echo dots and I bought this one as a gift for my nephew. He always plays with it when he visits.
It’s a great device for setting cooking timers or listen to music while cleaning. I mostly use it to set timers when cooking. It’s very handy as you can set multiple timers, all without pushing a single button.
I am a very soft spoken person and I think the voice recognition works better than Siri on my iPhone. Only few times will I have to repeat myself. But again I am soft spoken.
It’s very easy to set up different skills. I have connected my Apple Music and Pandora account with no issues. The sound quality is great when listening to music. I was afraid it wouldn’t be loud enough because of its size but that is not the case. I have used it to play relaxing music for my dogs while I’m at work. It’s a great little device for that. I like that I can control the volume and playlist from my phone. If I see that my dog is barking a lot from my in home camera I just log into the Alexa app and play music from the echo dot.
My favorite feature about the echo dot is that you can connect it with a smart plug. I have a room in my apartment that has no overhead light. I have connected a lamp to a smart plug. I just walk into the room and say Alexa turn on light. It will turn the light on for me. This is really handy at night when the room is dark. I don’t have to get out the flashlight on my phone and look for the switch to turn on.
I would highly recommend buying one. Especially if you are someone that listens to a lot of music or podcasts. Or even if you cook a lot and you have a small gas stove that doesn’t have a timer setting on it. It’s just easier than setting a timer on your microwave or phone.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2020*Since my first review 6 or so months ago I have added a Dot to nearly every room in my house, even the garage. The convenience is just to great to ignore. To be able to "drop-in" from anywhere in the house/garage to use as an intercom system within the house/garage what a time saver. My latest Dot was added to the bathroom, you dog lovers 🐶 will understand this, you are in the middle of giving your 75lb hairy dog 🐶 a bath, the dog shampoo needs to stay on the dog 🐶 for 10 minutes, I can ask Dot to set a timer and nothing is more convienent then that!*
What's not to like, a small but mighty Echo Dot, love it! I put this little Dot on my night stand and ditched my alarm clock with the annoying glowing clock numbers staring at me all the time, making me count the hours and minutes until I had to get out of bed. Now I let Dot worry about times, alarms, reminders and the like. If I wake up in the night I have my Dot soothe me back to sleep with any number of choices, meditation relaxation music, the ocean waves or even a crackling camp fire with Crickets. I can add to my "to do list" or shopping list in the moment, no more running for a pen and paper. My bedroom Dot links up with my dining room Echo Plus and I have music again, when, where and how I like it. Mozart to 70's soft rock, or the holiday stuff, add a little local or national news it's just awesome. I feel like I have two little assistants standing by anytime I need them, whats the weather outside, how are the roads, add dog food to my shopping list....Love, love, LOVE💖
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020I own an Echo (1st generation), an Echo Dot (2d generation), and 3 of these Echo Dot (3rd generation). Comparing to generation 2, these sound so much better. Most of my use is listening to music, to use generation 2 I would have to pair it with a bluetooth speaker. My 1st generation has the best sound, but it is also a lot bulkier and more expensive. I love that Generation 3 did away with the big Amazon logo on the front, for a more conspicuous look. Generation 3 is the perfect combination of sound, looks, and size. I wouldnt listen to music on generation 2 without pairing it with a bluetooth speaker (for some reason the bluetooth was not stable either), but gen 3 sounds music sounds decent . Definitely an upgrade from gen2. The onw advantage of gen2 is the use of a standard micro-USB power cord for power. Generation 1 and 3 come with non standard power cords. I am still debating replacing the gen 2 with a gen 3, and about adding one to the garage. I keep wanting to buy more of these.
Top 10 cool things I commonly do with Alexa:
* I use these as a house intercom system.
* I can ask alexa to call my phone when I can't find it. Amazing how often that one gets used.
* We get groceries through Amazon Fresh, so now we all ask alexa to buy whatever groceries we need, and they will get added to the cart for the next grocery delivery. No more grocery list.
* I can ask alexa to "drop in" to my sons bedroom, which lets me listen in to what is happening when it gets crazy (it makes a beep sound, so he knows when I am listening). This also lets me talk to my husband while he is in his office and I am in the kitchen without yelling.
* I have always listened to music while in the kitchen, but its nice to be able to control what you play through these.
* I ask alexa to announce "food is ready", the announcement is then relayed to all fire tablets, fire tv, and echo devices throughout the house. No one has an excuse they didn't hear me call them to the table.
* I can ask Alexa to start a timer while I am cooking and my hands are elbow deep in food.
* I can ask Alexa to make it colder (with Ecobee smart thermostat) , pause TV, resume TV, play a show, and turn off the lights while watching tv.
* I keep catching my son having the funniest conversations with Alexa, she has definitely answered a lot of "why" questions that would usually go to me. :)
He also plays music through his dot.
* I can control what time wake up alarm goes off in which room's device.
