Ohio CollegeAdvantage 529 Plan Referral Promotion Code: Free $25

This is a friendly reminder that you can still get a $25 head start to your child’s college fund if you open a 529 account with the Ohio CollegeAdvantage plan and fund with $25 of your own. Not only is the free money nice, but this is actually a very good plan in which I am making monthly automatic contributions.

Rated a Top 529 Plan by Morningstar
In a recent article The Best and Worst 529 College-Savings Plans by Morningstar, the Ohio CollegeAdvantage plan was rated in the top 5 plans:

Features they liked included having a wide variety of investment options (including active/passive, multiple age-based options, and even ultra-safe CDs), as well as low total expenses. In-state resident can also deduct up to $2,000 of contributions per year, with excess carryover allowed.

My Investment Choice: Inflation-Protected Bonds
529 plans aren’t perfect, and you have to be careful about what you’re invested in. This article I found on BH summarizes my concerns well:

…saving for college isn’t like saving for retirement. The run-up is much shorter, 18 years at most instead of 30 or 40, so most of the miraculous gains of compound interest are lost. Second, the payout is far more immediate and inflexible. People can choose when to retire, delay if they have to, and ride out ups and down in the market over decades. For most students, college happens three months after graduation, ready or not, and the check is due on Day 1.

I explored some conservative 529 investment options here, and based on my conclusions I am currently putting all my contributions into the Vanguard Inflation-Protected Bond option. This works especially well since TIPS are best held in tax-advantaged accounts.

Refer-A-Friend Bonus Instructions

  1. You can enroll online or via mail. The online process was quick and easy, and I didn’t have to mail in anything.
  2. The first step is to input your personal info and choose a login/password. Next, you’ll verify your e-mail and complete the application.
  3. After that, you’ll choose your funding amount and select an investment fund. Your initial deposit must be a least $25, and is funded using the account/routing numbers of your bank account. At the bottom, you will need to enter a referral code to get the bonus. Enter *.
  4. In 1-3 days, your initial deposit will be sucked out, and in 5-7 business days you will get your $25 bonus. The $25 will be deposited directly into the 529 account, and will be invested in the same thing as your initial deposit.

* Number is randomly generated. If you can’t see any numbers above, please use 2483590. With this program, both the newly referred and the referrer get $25. As promised, I have received several referrals from readers, and have thus included their referral codes to be shared here. I probably won’t have time to do it again for this promotion, but keep your eyes out for future similar offers.

Citi Forward Card Review + Rewards Summary

Citi Forward CardI ended up applying for the Citi Forward® Card mentioned several days ago. It ends up being great card for those who want the best rewards on eating out at restaurant and buying anything at Amazon.com. Here’s why…

This card works off the same ThankYou points system as many other Citibank cards. 10,000 points = $100 gift card at stores like Sears, Macy’s, Staples, Old Navy, Gap, etc. 14,000 points = $100 prepaid Visa credit card. 16,000 points = $100 in straight cash (a check sent directly to you). If you can find a store where you can use a $100 gift card = 10,000 points, that basically a penny per point.

What makes this card unique is that you get 100 points for each month you paid on time and don’t exceed your credit limit, as well as a highly touted 0.25% interest rate reduction after 3 months in a row of making a purchase, staying within limit and paying on time (max reduction 2%).

You also get 5 points for every $1 you spend on restaurants, book stores, video rental stores and movie theaters. On everything else, you get the plain vanilla 1 reward point for every $1 spent. There is no annual fee for the card.

5x Rewards at Restaurants
Again, at 1 penny per point with gift cards, getting 5x points is like getting 5% back when eating out. At that rate, eating out $170 a month will get me a $100 gift card every year. Even if you convert to straight cash, that’s still 3.125% cash back at restaurants (5/1.6). Or 3.57% back if you are okay with prepaid Visa card, which I am since they are usable anywhere that takes credit cards.

5x Rewards on Books = 5% back at Amazon
Here’s an interesting question. Who’s the most popular bookstore? Amazon.com. With the Citi mtvU card for college students, the 5% back on books worked on all purchases at Amazon, even if it wasn’t 100% books, since they really have no way of telling. Update: I have verified 5x points at Amazon.com.

Business Mastercard Easy Savings: Get 5% Back on USPS Online Postage, Dunkin Donuts, & More

MasterCard has an automatic rebate program called Easy Savings that works with “a MasterCard small business or select middle market card issued in the United States, from a participating bank.” This includes certain business debit Mastercards. You can find out if your card qualifies by visiting the website and typing in the card number and trying to register for free.

Here is a list of participating merchants. Two newly added offers are 5% back at the U.S. Postal Service Click-N-Ship website (online postage) and Dunkin Donuts shops. I know some active eBay sellers that wouldn’t mind a 5% discount on postage. The rebates are automatic and show up on your monthly statements. You don’t even have to click through a portal like eBates, just shop like normal.

My CitiBusiness Mastercard and WaMu Business Debit cards were accepted. Given that any individual (as a sole proprietorship) can get either a business credit card or business checking account (with debit card), this is then basically open to anyone who wants it badly enough.

Free Experian PLUS Credit Score From American Express

American Express is temporarily offering a peek at your Experian PLUS credit score. This is Experian’s own proprietary credit score, but is the best you can get from Experian since you can no longer get your FICO Score based on your Experian credit report. (Only Equifax and Transunion.) PLUS has a range of 330-830 as opposed to the FICO range of 300-850.

You can either try this link or log in and look for “View your complimentary Credit Score & Report now.” under Card Options. It is free, and appears to be promoting their CreditSecure paid product. You do not need to enroll in CreditSecure to get your free score.

From their site:

How much does My Credit Score & Report cost?
My Credit Score & Report is a complimentary benefit offered exclusively to American Express Cardmembers. You pay absolutely nothing. Simply sign up to gain access to your Credit Score and Report.

How long will I be enrolled in My Credit Score & Report?
Your enrollment in My Credit Score & Report will last 30 days. After 30 days, you will no longer have access to your complimentary Credit Score and Report. If you wish to continue enjoying access to your Credit Score and Report, you may enroll in CreditSecure.

As always, you can get your free credit reports (not scores) at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Gift Code for Free Insurance Kit + Will & Trust Kit From SuzeOrman.com

Suze Orman is giving away her stuff again!

Insurance Kit
I’m not 100% sure of what all this kit provides you, but it appears to be some sort of questionnaire which helps determine your insurance needs. I’ll try it out myself shortly. From the site:

This one-of-a-kind program provides you and your family with an instant, on-line evaluation of your insurance needs. Suze’s Insurance Kit provides easy to understand, step-by-step advice to help you determine if you have the right coverage in place for all the important areas of your life.

It also includes a disaster simulator and a online home inventory tracker which can store photos and receipts in case of an insurance claim.

To get your free activation code, enter the following gift code: “people first“.

Will and Trust Kit
Based on a question-and-answer format, this software includes the ability to create a will, a revocable trust, Financial Power of Attorney, and an Advanced Directive / Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare. I’m not sure how this compares to a more established legal service like LegalZoom which I had considered using up until now (I used them to incorporate my home business), but they charge about $100 for a basic will.

I would think that it would at least be an acceptable stopgap solution for those with simple estates, but for those who have lots of assets or complex issues, hiring an attorney would be worth the extra cost. I think having an advanced healthcare directive is an even better idea. Remember, it’s your family that will have to deal with all this! Do them a favor.

RecycleBank: A Rewards Program For Recycling

We are surrounded by rewards programs. I have a club card to shop at the Safeway grocery store, where I can buy some soda with “Coke Rewards” points, and I can also earn United frequent flier miles based on my total purchase amount. Finally, I pay for everything with a credit card that gets me cash back.

Now, here’s a rewards program to help us recycle more. With RecycleBank, each participating household gets a recycle bin with a computer chip that helps you track how much you recycle. The more you recycle, the more points you earn, which can be redeemed for purchases at stores like CVS pharmacy and Home Depot. You can earn up to $540 annually.

The municipality wins as well, because now there is less waste being sent to landfills, which lowers their costs dramatically. Both RecycleBank’s income and the consumer rewards come from these savings. According to this Time article, recycling rates in one of the first Philadelphia neighborhoods that RecycleBank served rose from 7% to 90% in a matter of months.

Not a bad idea at all! I agree that most people like the idea of recycling, but many of us could use a push in our busy lives. The only catch, really, is that even though are expanding, there are still only a relatively limited number of participating cities. See if yours is on the list.
