eBates CyberMonday Promotion: Get Extra Online Shopping CashBack Today

Shopping cashback website eBates is offering up to double their usual cashback percentages today since it’s CyberMonday. Only 10 hours left as of this writing!

For example, get 8% back at Target.com (4% normally), 4% back at CircuitCity.com (2% normally), and 6% back at American Eagle, Gap, BabyGap, and OldNavy (3% normally). Obviously, don’t spend more just because you get more money back.

If you’re a new customer, don’t miss your free $10 Bonus from eBates if you join and make a purchase.

As for me, over Thanksgiving I got addicted to the video game Guitar Hero. 😉 Target had a nice sale of $85 for the Guitar Hero 2 3 + 2 guitars for PS2 on Black Friday, but it’s gone now. Circuit City has the game + 1 controller for PS2 for $60. Hmmm… you think my nephews and nieces will let me play if I buy it for them? Anyone know of any better bundle deals with 2 guitars?

UPromise Holiday Promotion: $25 Bonus With Purchase

UPromise is mainly a cash-back online shopping mall like eBates that deposits money into a 529 college savings fund. If you haven’t opened an account already, now may be a good time to do so if you were planning to do some shopping at the stores below anyways – They are offering a $25 bonus if you are a new sign-up and make one purchase at a qualifying cash-back store before 12/31/07.

Upromise.com

Non-eligible retailers are: Amazon.com, Avis, Bed Bath & Beyond, Butterfield Blooms, Budget, Cryo-Cell, Eddie Bauer, Eddie Bauer Outlet, Florist.com, Flowers U.S.A., FTD.com, Gift Sense, RedEnvelope, Ross-Simons, Sharper Image and Upromise Cruises.

Qualifying retailers are the rest, with some popular ones being Target.com, Walmart.com, eBay, Travelocity, CircuitCity.com, Nordstrom, and JCPenney. Lots of smaller ones too.

I’m not a huge fan of UPromise myself, having only earned about $5 since joining the program. I do link my Safeway Club card so each time I buy my nectar of life (Diet Coke) I get a few pennies back.

If you don’t like the idea of your money being swept into their 529 (no kids?), you can fill out this withdrawal form, mail it in, and have a check sent to you. Instructions are on the form. You need a signature guarantee if it’s more than $200, which is free at many banks and credit unions.

Update: You can also get a $10 bonus from eBates.

Free Book Giveaway: Your Money & Your Brain

I didn’t want to clutter up my review post, but I did get this book free from a PR firm, and they were also generous enough to provide additional copies to give away to readers. So if you are interested in getting a free copy of Your Money and Your Brain, leave a comment with your e-mail address (will not be shown or shared) to enter the drawing. I will take entries until Friday 11/23 at Midnight. I have three free copies, so the odds are pretty good!

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Winners chosen randomly. One entry per person, and US residents only. Blah Blah Blah…

TradeKing and Scottrade Promotion: Reimbursed Account Transfer Fees

Looks like TradeKing is trying to convert some customers from “one of the larger online brokers”… I wonder who they are talking about? From an e-mail today:

Due to the effect the sub-prime mortgage fallout has had on one of the larger online brokers, some investors have asked us if we’re at risk for similar problems. The answer is a resounding “No.” TradeKing does not invest in any mortgage-related securities, including sub-prime mortgages.

Furthermore, we protect your account against losses up to $25 million as a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), and with supplemental coverage from Lloyd’s of London. If you’re concerned about an account you hold with another broker, perhaps you should consider consolidating your assets with TradeKing. We’ll even reimburse any account transfer fees your other broker may slap on you between now and December 31, 2007.

This reimbursement offer may save you $50-$100 if you’ve been wanting to do an ACAT account transfer to them from your existing broker. Scottrade also offers up to $100 in fee reimbursements for inbound transfers [update: if your account value is greater than $25,000]. Read more about both brokers in my TradeKing review and my Scottrade review.

You’ll should also weigh the upfront benefits against the potential commission savings if you go with a broker offering free stock trades.

$50 From Wells Fargo, 5.65% APY 4-Month CD

Wells Fargo Bank is offering a $50 bonus for opening a checking account with them. Note that they do perform a hard credit check. Their checking account rules vary by state, but I think most have one that is free with direct deposit. You can simply simulate a direct deposit with an online bank transfer via Capital One 360 or similar. Via commenter Paul.

Limit one $50 bonus per household. To qualify for your $50 bonus, you must open and fund a new personal Wells Fargo checking account with a minimum initial deposit of $100 (not including the $50 bonus) by November 30, 2007. The $50 bonus is available with all Wells Fargo checking accounts, including non interest-earning checking accounts, except for Wells Fargo College Checking?, Wells Fargo Teen CheckingSM and Wells Fargo Opportunity Checking? accounts. The $50 bonus will be deposited to your new Wells Fargo checking account within 30 to 45 days of opening.

I thought I’d also throw out there that IndyMac Bank is offering a 4-month CD paying 5.65% APY. $5,000 minimum, online-only.

Signup Bonuses: $100 From LaSalle Bank, $50 From NewBank

LaSalle Bank (now owned by Bank of America) is offering a $100 bonus for opening a checking account, savings account, and using the debit card once. Likes like you need $250 for the checking and $100 for the savings. Keep the minimum amount in there ($250 for checking, none for savings*), and that’s a very nice rate of return.

In addition, you can even fund with a credit card (up to $1,000 per account) and have it count as a purchase. Great for those with rewards credit cards.

Discover Card Holiday Mall Promotion: 10% Back + $100 Loophole?

Discover Holiday Mall BannerThe Holiday SeasonTM seems to start earlier every year. Discover Card has already announced their 2007 Holiday Mall Promotion, which essentially give you $20 back for every $200 that you spend at limited mall locations:

Head to one of over 160 participating shopping centers from November 1 – December 31, 2007, and you’ll get a $20 Discover Gift Card for every $200 you spend on your Discover Card*. Just take $200 in Discover Card receipts from any store(s) at a participating mall or shopping center to Customer Service (or the Discover Card Booth) and redeem them for a $20 Discover Gift Card.

The fine print version:

*Get a $20 Discover Gift Card for every $200 in purchases made with your Discover Card at a participating shopping center between 11/1/2007-12/31/2007, while supplies last. Original receipts must be presented to a participating shopping center’s Customer Service Desk (or the Discover Card Booth) by 12/31/07. Limit five Gift Cards per account during the promotion period. See Gift Card terms and conditions for full details.

Doing the math, you can up to 10% back this way if you manage to spend an exact multiple of $200, with a maximum of 5 gift cards ($100) for $1,000 in total spending per Discover card account. Not too shabby if you’re gonna spend that much anyways.

But during last year’s promotion, a reader happened upon a loophole: If you return your purchase, there is no requirement to return the gift cards (and still isn’t one this year). Maybe you found something cheaper elsewhere, maybe you just decided against buying yet another iPod. Now, you may have some ethical problems with taking advantage of this loophole. In that case, you can try to hand them back to the Customer Service clerk. But be careful, because if you end buying stuff again later, you might not be able get that $20 gift card back again since they don’t have any official mechanism to return the gift cards. Found via Fatwallet.

This would go nicely with the Discover More Card, or the Discover Miles Card which offers 12,000 Miles (worth a $50 gift card + $25 cash) for making one purchase a month for a year. Both also offer 0% APR balance transfers.

Checking Account Bonuses: $125 From Chase, $100 From Bank of America

Here are some good potential bonuses for new customers:

Bank of America is offering a $100 bonus for opening a new personal checking account with them. Not available to existing checking account holders.

To receive your $100, apply online or go to your nearest banking center. Use offer code AOU2611, and open a personal checking account before January 31, 2008.

Offer does not apply to second or multiple checking accounts and/or existing checking customers. Student checking accounts are not eligible for this offer.

Chase Bank is offering a $125 bonus for opening Chase Free Checking account at branch, and using Direct Deposit.

Offer valid 10/01/07 through 12/31/07. Chase Free CheckingSM requires a $100 minimum opening deposit of new money (money not currently held by this bank or its affiliates) to qualify for the $125 reward. Chase Free Checking has no monthly service fee when you have a monthly direct deposit. Limit one personal checking account-related reward/premium per customer, per calendar year.

Note that both banks have pulled a hard credit check on me when applying online. Not sure if they would do so if you applied in branch.

Another $5 Sign-Up Bonus From TextPayMe

If you jumped on the old TextPayMe $5 bonus (now expired), you may be interested in the new TextPayMe $5 bonus. Apparently they decided to chuck out the old system completely when they created their new system linked with Amazon Payments (kind of like Google Checkout). There are a few things to watch out for. You need to add a cell phone number and verify a bank account before you get the bonus. There is also a $10 minimum for bank account withdrawals, and a $1 minimum for withdrawal into an Amazon.com gift certificate. So either send the $5 to a friend’s account and take all $10 out, or just treat it as a $5 gift certificate. You can use the exact same number as last time, I just got my $5:

(I also apparently had 12 cents left over from Mechanical Turk.)

In addition, you can also make some more money by taking advantage of the fact that you can send money using credit cards with no fees during their beta period. Here are some details from their help section:

You can make a payment using credit cards, your bank accounts or account balance. Accepted credit cards are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and Diners Club. […] During the Beta Period, TextPayMe will not charge any fees for sending and receiving payments on the website or on your mobile phone. […] Personal Accounts may receive up to $500 per month. The receiving limit may be raised or removed entirely once a credit card and verified bank account have been registered in the account. […] Personal Accounts may send up to $500 per month once a credit card or verified bank account is registered in the account. Once both are registered, the sending limit may be raised or removed entirely.

Best Credit Card For College Students – 5% Back At Restaurants and Amazon.com

I ran across this article Best credit cards for college kids on CNN Money. I found it interesting that 75% of all college students have a credit card, when I see so much media attention to how credit card companies target students. Seems like students now are seen more as big kids instead of young adults (again, note the title of the article). Soon they’ll need lessons on how to feed and bathe themselves…

The article then goes on to list some good characteristics of a college credit card, which really didn’t seem any different than what anyone should look for in a credit card… Low APR? Less fees? Calling Captain Obvious! CNN did suggest out the best credit card for those select “responsible” students – the Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card, which was interesting.

The goal of every rewards card is to give you just enough good stuff to have you use it for everything, and this card is smart. What were my two top expenses as a college student besides rent? Eating out and textbooks. So guess what, the card gives you 5 ThankYou Points for every dollar you spend at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters and video rental stores. These points can be converted to up to 5% back in gift cards or 5% back in cash towards your student loans. Some may see this as sneaky way to prey on college “kids”, but I see it as another loss leader to take advantage of.

In addition, one big “loophole” is that everything you buy from Amazon.com gets 5% back as well, as it is categorized as a bookstore! They can’t tell if you bought books there, or went for 8 bags of groceries and an iPod Touch instead.

The only problem is that if you aren’t a student, some people report that they ask for verification. Some have gotten transcript requests, many others slip by. I know some people out there have this card; please report your experiences! Students can also earn 250-2000 points per semester for maintaining a good GPA, and 25 points each month for not exceeding your credit limit and paying on time.

Discover More Card Limited 5% Cashback

The Discover® More® Card has been on my list of top 0% APR offers for a while now.

5% Cashback Bonus “Get More” Program
As an overall cashback rewards card, this card is actually subpar. You need to reach total annual purchases of $3,000 just to get to the standard 1% cashback tier… yawn. What you have to do is take specific advantage of is the 5% cashback on certain broad categories that change each quarter – like travel, home improvement, gas, and restaurants. Here are the categories for 2012:

  • January – March: Gas and Entertainment
  • April – June: Restaurants and Movies
  • July – September: Gas and Summer Fun
  • October – December: Holiday Shopping

Zecco Trading Changes Free Stocks Trades Offer

Zecco Trading has just changed their pricing for new accounts from 40 free trades/month to 10 trades/month, and there is a new requirement that you must have $2,500 in account equity (cash + value of stocks). If you have less than $2,500, then trades cost $4.50. However, existing customers and anyone who applied before 10/1 will keep the old pricing until the beginning of 2008. After that, everyone will be at 10 free trades/month.

Instead of paying for free trades you may not use, we’re investing that money in the tools and functionality that you will. Over the coming months you can expect:

* Significant investments in the number of service representatives and training.
* Addition of 3 and 4 legged options strategies so you can trade butterflies, condors, and more.
* Release of a sophisticated options analytics platform.
* Access to ZeccoShare, the ground-breaking investor social network at zecco.com.

Zecco is still the cheapest place for my “fun money” account and 10 trades is enough for me, although I’ll have to add some more money into my account in a couple of months to reach $2,500. If you already have an account, log into your trading account for more info; there is also a new offer FAQ. If you are researching Zecco, be sure to check out my Zecco Review (two parts) for some tips to maximize your account. Thanks to Wes for the tip.
