American Express Twitter #hashtags Promotion

Update: There is now a $10 off $50 gift card at participating malls, $5 off $25+ at Shell Gas, $25 off $75 at Ticketmaster.com, and $50 off $250 at Travelocity. If you have more than one American Express card, you can link one per unique Twitter account.

American Express is definitely one of the more creative card issuers when it comes to using new social media and technology. This time around they want to you to use Twitter #hashtags to earn discounts at various merchants.

  1. Link your Twitter account at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter.
  2. Register your American Express card.
  3. Tweet specific #hashtags to sign up for specific offers. You’ll get a confirmation almost immediately that you are enrolled via an @reply back.
  4. See what’s available and easily enroll by retweeting the offers on this page.

AmEx also has similar promotions going on with Foursquare and Facebook.

Free Chapter: New Edition of The Undercover Economist

Writer Tim Harford recently published a newly revised edition of his book The Undercover Economist. I read the first edition in 2009 and definitely enjoyed how it explained economics using everyday occurrences. I wrote about two memorable examples: price targeting and coffee shops, and the efficient market hypothesis and supermarket lines.

According to Harford himself, the biggest change in the new edition is a new chapter about eggs, probabilities, and the financial crisis (naturally). As a favor to those of us who already have the first edition, he has kindly put the new chapter as a free PDF download. I’ve read it already and it was worth the time spent even though the subject has already been covered extensively.

Hat tip to MR. Harford also has a handy website that republishes the articles he writes for The Financial Times.

$15 Free Live Nation Credit With Starwood Preferred Guest

If you are a member of the Starwood Preferred Guest hotel program (good credit card), enter your SPG number at spgpromos.com/lncashcodes and get a free $15 promo code (limited quantities) redeemable towards merchandise or concert tickets. The easiest thing to buy if you don’t want to spend anything out-of-pocket is an MP3 album download (decent selection, go to Music/All MP3s not just Hot Downloads). I picked up the Glee movie soundtrack (~$12 value) for DW with no credit card required.

FNBO Direct Returning Customer Promo 1.35% APY

If you have a dormant FNBO Direct account, you may be interested to know that they are offering a promotional rate of 1.35% APY beginning July 1, 2012 on all the money above what your balance was on June 29th, 2012. (Only available to existing FNBO Direct customers as of June 29, 2012.) Even better, the rate is guaranteed until December 31, 2012, making it better than 6-month CDs from other banks. All rates above have expired and FNBO is now offering a standard rate of 0.85% APY.

I should probably move a little money over… see my June 2012 Emergency Fund update for where else I stash my cash. Also see my rate chaser calculator for some real-world estimates of how much extra interest you’d get.

FNBO Direct has become just another commodity online-savings account these days, so it’s good to see they’re trying to keep things at least a little interesting. I’d be a little annoyed if I kept a lot of money in there this whole time, though! The fine print from the e-mail I received is quoted below.

Free 500 Delta Skymiles via Le Club Accorhotels

It would appear that you can get 500 bonus Delta Skymiles by signing up for a hotel rewards account with Le Club Accorhotels and choosing Skymiles as your preferred loyalty program. Reading the fine print, I’m not quite sure if you need to actually stay in a hotel for the miles to transfer over, but it’s worth a shot.

American Express & Foursquare Promotion

Update: Foursquare and American Express are running this promotion again nationwide – even if you did it already previously – this time for $5 off $10 at participating small businesses. I just looked for restaurants nearby that accepted AmEx and found several that are eligible = another cheap date night! Just “check-in” and you can load the discount onto your linked credit card. Thanks EC for the tip.

Foursquare is a location-aware smartphone app where you can “check-in” at specific places and share information. First, connect your foursquare account to any eligible American Express Card at sync.americanexpress.com. Then follow the quoted directions below on your smartphone. I want to say that all this should work with an iPod Touch or iPad as well, but I haven’t tried.

Check in at a merchant with a Special, load the Special to your card, and then pay for your over $10 purchase with your American Express ® Card. No need to show your phone to a cashier or anything – you’ll receive the credit on your Amex statement within 5 business days. You can find dozens of deals in your area just by hitting ‘Specials’ on the ‘Explore’ tab on your foursquare app (there are hundreds of thousands of participating businesses).

p.s. You can still score free points from Hilton Honors and other rewards programs by “checking in” using the Foursquare app when you register with TopGuest. You can get 50 Hilton points every day you check in at a Hilton hotel, for example. You only need to be within 10 miles of the hotel to check in the first time, and in future times you need to be nearby at all. I can check in once a day, every day, for 50 points, although I usually forget to.

My Credit Card Rewards Maximization Strategy

Speaking of credit card rewards optimization, I was thinking about how the algorithm might work for me. I’m curious if others have a similar system. Man, I have a lot of cards…

Tier 1 – Special Rotating or Temporary Promotions (5%+ back)

First up, you’d want to check for cards that offer an exceptional bonus cash back. Chase Freedom and Citi Dividend both offer 5% cash back on rotating categories on up to $1,500 in spending each quarter. That’s a possible $75 extra each quarter for each card. Other cards may offer a temporary bonus as well.

  • Chase Freedom® – $150 Bonus – 5% purchases can come from gas stations and local commuter transportation 01.01.2016 – 03.31.2016
  • Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card – Earn 5% cash back every quarter in must-have categories.  Right now, on eligible purchases within the Hilton Portfolio, car rental agencies, movie theaters and theme parks from 7/1/14 – 9/30/14. Enrollment each quarter is quick and easy.

Since I don’t buy that much gas, I would only charge restaurants on the Chase Freedom (but not gas) and airline purchases on the Citi Dividend.

Tier – Permanent Category Bonuses (3%+ back)

Some credit cards offer a year-round bonus on things like restaurants, travel, gas, groceries, and more.

Tier 3 – Everything Else (2%+ back)

Here’s your backup catch-all card. Don’t settle for 1% back here, you can do better. 🙂

If you like airline miles or hotel points, here’s where your personal spending habits may also factor in. I value Starwood points at 2 cents or more per point due to their ability to convert to miles and primarily their value in hotel stays (including Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels) so I actually switch between a 2% cash back card and the Starwood depending on my point balance as I like to keep enough to pay for upcoming hotel stays. My Fidelity cash ends up in a 529 so that’s not as much fun. 😉

American Express cards also offer extended warranty protection that I like for larger purchases as their customer service is always the easiest to deal with when you actually need to file a claim. However, American Express cards aren’t accepted in certain cases (like my auto insurance), so you should have a Visa/Mastercard as a final backup.

All in all, it’s not as crazy as it seems. If the Chase/Citi 5% categories aren’t daily-use categories but things like airfare then I don’t keep them in the wallet (0-3 cards). Out of Tier 2, I only keep the Blue Cash AmEx with me (1 card). Out of Tier 3, I actually have a similar-but-grandfathered Fidelity 2% Mastercard and the Starwood AmEx (2 cards). So the total is really about an average of around 4. I’m thinking of switching to an All-Ett “world’s thinnest wallet” which should cut the thickness in half.

Paying Estimated Taxes With Chase Ink Bold Card + PayUSATax.com

After getting the Chase Sapphire Preferred card $500 in airfare bonus, I developed a taste for Ultimate Rewards (UR) points. You can cash out UR points at a flat 10,000 points = $100. You can also use them towards travel at an Expedia-like portal for 10,000 points = $125 toward airfare, hotel, and car rentals. The prices are not marked up and you can combine cash and points however you like, so I use 1.25 cents per point as a baseline value. Example of combining cash and points:

Finally, you can transfer them to United Airlines, Southwest, British Airways, Korean, Hyatt, and Marriott rewards at a 1:1 ratio. If you use United and British Airways for international and/or business-class flights, you can get closer to 2 cents per point in value.

Therefore, in my last round of application I decided to apply for the Ink Bold® Business Charge Card which was a small business card offering 50,000 bonus points – after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months your account is open. I wouldn’t mind only earning 1 UR point per dollar on most of my business spend, although they do offer 5X points per dollar in select business categories. (More details on the Chase Ink Bold Business Charge Card here.)

Spending $5,000 on a card over three months is not something I usually do and I didn’t have any large business expenses coming up, however, I do have to pay quarterly estimated taxes to Uncle Sam. As a result, I found PayUSATax.com (accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover) which had the lowest fee for making tax payments with a credit card at 1.89%. You can verify them as an authorized payment provider here at IRS.gov.

The IRS deadline for quarterly payment was coming up, so I decided to make a $5,000 payment for one quarter now and another $5,000 payment on the next billing statement for the next quarter. This meant I could charge $10,000 ($5,000 x 2) which would earn me 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points ($125 value) and I would be charged a $189 fee ($94.50 x 2). However, this would satisfy the spending requirement and would get me another 25,000 UR points ($312.50 value). Still a nice net win even after taking the fee into account.

As you can see from my statement scans below, the first $5,000 tax payment and $94.50 fee went through separately with no cash advance charges or other issues.

I also received my first 25,000 points on my very first statement:

Another useful perk of Ultimate Rewards points is that you can transfer them over to any other person’s account with no fee. This is handy to transfer between family or household members for pooling points and miles. My small business Ink Bold Business Charge Card UR points are in a different account than my personal Sapphire Preferred points, so I just transferred them over and it showed up instantly.

Exxon Mobil Speedpass Mastercard Promotion: Save 10 Cents a Gallon

Exxon Mobil and Mastercard have a promotion where if you link your Mastercard to a Speedpass, you’ll get 10 cents off per gallon from 6/1/12 to 8/31/12. Good at any Exxon or Mobil, up to 100 gallons total. Rebates will be credited in October 2012.

This appears to be a keychain fob that links to any existing credit/debit card but allows you to purchase gas without needing to swipe. So that would be 10 cents per gallon on top of your existing credit card rewards. Thanks to reader William P for the tip.
